Hilding Hagberg
Karl Hilding Hagberg (born October 28, 1899 in Gällivare , † December 17, 1993 in Luleå ) was a Swedish politician . From 1951 to 1964 he was chairman of the Communist Party of Sweden (SKP) (today: Vänsterpartiet ) and from 1933 to 1964 a member of the Reichstag .
Life
As a young miner in the Malmberget iron ore mines , Hagberg became a member of the Swedish Communist Party. Between 1930 and 1935 he was a staff member and then editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper Norrskensflamman, a regional communist party newspaper for the province of Norrbotten, and from 1943 to 1964 a senior staff member of the main party newspaper, the Ny Dag . In 1930 he became a member of the Politburo of the SKP Central Committee , which he remained until 1964. From 1933 to 1964 Hagberg was a member of the Second Chamber of the Swedish Reichstag.
As party leader, Hagberg pursued a pro-Soviet course. In 1956, for example, he supported the suppression of the Hungarian uprising and the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961. The following year, the SKP clearly lost the Swedish local elections. In the party, too close to the Soviet Union was seen as one reason for the defeat. Consequently, Hagberg was replaced as party chairman in 1964 by Carl-Henrik Hermansson , the SKP changed its program and statutes, renamed itself Vänsterpartiet kommunisterna (Left Party - Communists) and in the following years pursued a course critical of Moscow and Eurocommunist .
Together with much of the pro-Soviet wing, Hagberg left the party in 1977 and took part in the establishment of the Communist Workers' Party (APK) .
Hagberg died on December 17, 1993 in Luleå. His memoirs were published posthumously in 1995 under the title “Jag är och förblir communist” (“I am and remain a communist”).
