Alfred "Fredel" Kälin (born January 16, 1949 ) is a former Swiss cross-country skier and Nordic combined athlete . He started while playing for SC Einsiedeln and took part in the Winter Olympics for Switzerland in 1972 and 1976 . With the relay he won the bronze medal in 1972.

Career

Cross-country skiing

He qualified for the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo and was nominated for the Winter Games by the Swiss Olympic Committee. He was used in the individual competition over the 30 kilometers and in the relay. While he finished 17th in the individual race, he formed the Swiss relay together with Albert Giger , Alois Kälin and Edi Hauser . Completely surprisingly, the Swiss relay was able to secure the bronze medal behind the relay from the Soviet Union and Norway.

For Switzerland he took part in the 1974 Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun . There he formed the Swiss relay team with Albert Giger , Edi Hauser and Werner Geeser . The quartet finished the relay race in sixth place. In 1974 he was able to win the largest cross-country skiing event in Switzerland, the Engadin Skimarathon , for the first and only time .

In 1976 he qualified for his second Olympic Winter Games and was nominated by the Swiss Olympic Comité for the 1976 Winter Olympic Games in Innsbruck . He was allowed to start there in the individual races over the 15 and 30 kilometers as well as in the relay race. He finished the 15-kilometer race in 27th place and the 30-kilometer race in 29th place. Together with Franz Renggli , Edi Hauser and Heinz Gähler , he formed the Swiss relay, which took fifth place.

Nordic combination

In national competitions he also started as a Nordic combined athlete. In 1969 and 1970 he was twice Swiss champion in Nordic combined.
