Nika Fleiss (born December 14, 1984 in Brežice , Yugoslavia ) is a former Croatian ski racer . For several years she was among the extended world leaders in slalom and achieved six top 10 placements in the World Cup and two top 10 placements at world championships .

biography

Fleiss took part in FIS races from November 1999 , celebrated her first victories that same winter and started the European Cup for the first time in January 2001 . Although she had not yet contested any World Cup races , she took part in the slalom of the 2001 World Championship in St. Anton am Arlberg in February 2001 , which she finished in 22nd place. From the 2001/02 season Fleiss also started in the World Cup . In her first World Cup season she did not have a result because she could never qualify for a second round, but at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , the then 17-year-old achieved twelfth place in the slalom. The next winter Fleiss won her first World Cup points when she was tenth in the Park City slalom , but mostly she failed to qualify for the second run this winter as well. At the 2003 World Cup in St. Moritz , she even reached eighth place.

In the 2003/04 season Fleiss achieved her first victory in the European Cup and third place in the slalom classification. She also won the silver medal in slalom at the 2004 Junior World Championships in Maribor . In the World Cup she was already regularly among the fastest 20. In the following winter she was able to improve further in the World Cup. She achieved a total of four top 10 results and with sixth place in the slalom at the World Cup final in Lenzerheide on March 12, 2005, the best World Cup result of her career. She finished tenth in the Slalom World Cup. She was also tenth in the slalom of the 2005 World Championships in Santa Caterina . The 2005/06 season was no longer quite as successful . Fleiss achieved several top 15 placements, but was no longer in the top ten. However, in addition to the slalom, she was now also able to score in the giant slalom, which she had never achieved before. She achieved her best World Cup result in the giant slalom with 15th place on the Rettenbachferner in Sölden on October 22, 2005. In the then still new super combination , she was once among the fastest 30. At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , her best result was 19th place in the giant slalom.

On November 23, 2006 Fleiss was seriously injured in a training fall in Aspen in which she collided with the Austrian trainer Bernd Brunner. She suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament and had to take a break for the rest of the season. In her first World Cup race after her injury break, the slalom on the Reiteralm on November 10, 2007, Fleiss reported back with a 15th place. After further top 20 results, she achieved another top 10 result in the World Cup on January 30, 2009 as tenth in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen slalom - her first in almost four years. At the 2009 World Championships in Val-d'Isère , she finished 32nd in the giant slalom. In the slalom, she was eliminated in the first round.

In the 2009/10 season, Fleiss failed to achieve top 20 results in the World Cup for the first time since 2002, and for the first time in seven years (with the exception of her injury break) she failed to rank among the top 30 in the Slalom World Cup. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , she was 25th in slalom and eliminated in giant slalom. Due to the lack of World Cup success, Fleiss was dismissed from the squad by the Croatian Association after the season. She then ended her career at the age of 25. In April 2011, Fleiss appeared in the Croatian edition of Playboy magazine .
