James "Jimmy" Cochran (born May 29, 1981 in Burlington ) is a former American ski racer . He specialized in the disciplines of slalom and giant slalom and comes from the Vermont Cochran family , which has produced several world-class ski racers. Bob Cochran is his father; Marilyn Cochran , Barbara Ann Cochran and Lindy Cochran are his aunts. His cousin Jessica Kelley and his cousins Tim and Robby Kelley are or were ski racers. Cochran competed in the World Cup from 2003 to 2012 and took part in two Olympic Games and three World Championships .

Career

Cochran started skiing at the age of seven in the family-owned ski resort Cochran's Ski Area near Burlington. In March 1998 he competed in his first FIS races , and from January 2000 he played in the Nor-Am Cup . From 2001 he achieved his first victories in FIS races and his first top 10 placements in the Nor-Am Cup. In 2002 he began studying at the University of Vermont . After being accepted into the US ski team, Cochran made it to the top of the national league in the winter of 2003/04. First he achieved several podium places in the Nor-Am Cup, until he celebrated his first victory in the slalom in Mont-Tremblant at the end of winter , with which he was second in the Nor-Am slalom classification. At the national championships in 2004 he won his first two titles in slalom and giant slalom. In 2007 and 2008 two more titles were added in slalom and also in 2008 the fifth title in the combination.

After Cochran had failed to score points in his first World Cup starts in the winter of 2003/04, he won World Cup points for the first time on December 19, 2004 with 14th place in the giant slalom in Alta Badia . A year later he achieved his first top 10 result with seventh place in the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora , which was also his best World Cup result. Despite these occasional good results, qualifications for the second run were initially rare in World Cup races. He was more consistent in the Nor-Am Cup, where he was second in the giant slalom classification with two victories in the 2004/05 season and fifth in the slalom classification with one win in 2005/06 .

From 2005, Cochran was used at major events. At the 2005 World Championships in Bormio , he reached 16th place in the giant slalom and at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin as the best US American, he came twelfth in slalom. At the 2007 World Championships in Åre , however, after a failure in slalom, he was only 37th in giant slalom and with his teammates eleventh and last in team competition. From the winter of 2006/07 onwards, Cochran was able to qualify for the second round in World Cup races more often. In the 2007/08 season he drove with three top 10 placements (two eighth places in the slalom of Alta Badia and Adelboden and a tenth place in the giant slalom of Alta Badia) his overall best World Cup season. The following winter, Cochran fell back in the World Cup - he was not better than 18th in any race - but achieved tenth place in the slalom at the 2009 World Cup in Val-d'Isère with the fastest time in the second round.

From the 2009/10 season onwards , Cochran only started in slalom in the World Cup. He hadn't scored in any giant slalom last winter. He was able to improve again compared to the previous year's results, was among the fastest 15 in three World Cup slaloms and achieved his fifth and final top 10 result on December 21, 2009 with ninth place in Alta Badia, making him 20th in the Slalom World Cup. At the 2010 Winter Olympics , however, he was eliminated in the second slalom run after he was only 44th in the first run. In the summer of 2010, Cochran suffered an ankle injury during a training camp in New Zealand , which is why he was sidelined for the entire winter of 2010/11. From November 2011 he took part in races again and drove twice under the fastest 20 in the World Cup in the 2011/12 season . On March 29, 2012 Cochran ended his active career with the start at the US slalom championships.
