Irene Curtoni (born August 11, 1985 in Échirolles , France ) is an Italian ski racer . She specializes in the disciplines of slalom and giant slalom . Her sister Elena Curtoni , who is five years her junior, is also a ski racer.

biography

Curtoni was born in France because her parents were working in the winter sports resort of Les Deux Alpes . She began to learn to ski at the age of one and a half, when she first took part in a race when she was three. In December 2000 she took part in FIS races for the first time, appearances in the European Cup followed from February 2002. For several years she was hardly noticed because of her achievements and it seemed as if she could not implement her talent. This changed, however, in the 2007/08 season when she achieved numerous good results in the European Cup (first, second and third place each), making her the slalom discipline ranking for herself.

On December 29, 2007 Curtoni contested her first World Cup race and retired in the first run in the Lienz slalom . She won World Cup points for the first time on January 13, 2008 when she was 16th in the Maribor Slalom . In March 2010 she won the silver medal in the giant slalom at the first Winter Military World Games in Aosta . In the second half of the 2010/11 season she achieved her first top 10 results in the World Cup with eighth place in the giant slalom in Zwiesel and seventh in the slalom in Špindlerův Mlýn . In the 2011/12 season she achieved four top 10 results. Among them was her first World Cup podium on March 2, 2012 when she finished third in the giant slalom in Ofterschwang .

In the winter of 2012/13 Curtoni established himself with six top 10 placements close to the world's best. Due to osteoarthritis of the back, she was only able to contest two races in 2013/14 and ended the season prematurely. Recovered , she was able to finish in the top 10 in the 2014/15 season , but she was unable to qualify for the World Cup. In the 2015/16 season it made it into the top ten five times, and three times in the 2016/17 season . Curtoni won Risenslalom gold at the Winter Military World Games in Sochi in 2017 . On December 20, 2017, she took third place in the Courchevel Parallel Slalom , equivalent to a second World Cup podium. In the further course of the 2017/18 World Cup , she finished five more times in the top ten, at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , she was tenth in slalom.

Curtoni won the bronze medal in the team competition at the 2019 World Championships in Åre .
