Alexander Ploner (born July 10, 1978 in Bruneck ) is an Italian ski racer . The special discipline of the South Tyrolean is the giant slalom .

Career

Ploner learned to ski at the age of three. After taking part in FIS races for a few years , he competed in the European Cup for the first time in December 1997 , but did not start there regularly until February 1999. At the beginning of his career he started in slalom and giant slalom as well as in very few super-Gs and descents, but over the years he developed into a pure giant slalom specialist. In 2000 he became Italian champion in giant slalom, but then suffered a cruciate ligament and meniscus tear and was unable to contest any races for the entire 2000/01 season.

After successful rehabilitation, Ploner started the World Cup for the first time in Val-d'Isère on December 9, 2001 , and a month later he won his first World Cup points with 20th place in Adelboden . A little later he celebrated his first European Cup victory. On February 3, 2002, he reached twelfth place in the World Cup giant slalom in St. Moritz and qualified with this performance for the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , where he was sixth after the first run but was eliminated in the second.

On February 28, 2004, the Italian achieved his first and so far only podium in the World Cup with third place in Kranjska Gora . In March he won two European Cup giant slaloms and won the discipline classification. In December 2004 he suffered a serious knee injury for the second time and was sidelined for the rest of the season.

After this injury, Ploner did not find his way back to his old form for a long time. It was not until January 2008 that he achieved a result in the World Cup points again with 13th place in Adelboden. He actually made his comeback in the 2008/09 season: with two victories in the European Cup, he won the giant slalom for the second time in five years and achieved his second top 10 position in the World Cup with eighth place in Adelboden on January 10th. On February 13, he started at the 2009 World Championships in Val-d'Isère and finished eighth in the giant slalom. At the end of March he won the Italian championship title in giant slalom again after nine years.

In the 2009/10 season , Ploner stood out with consistently good performances (four top 10 placements), which finally brought him tenth place in the giant slalom World Cup. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , he was 18th in the giant slalom. In the 2010/11 season he could not repeat the previous year's results. The best result of the season was a 14th place in Adelboden . It was therefore not used at the 2011 World Cup.
