Stefan Johann Thanei (born September 3, 1981 in Schlanders ) is an Italian freestyle skier in the discipline of ski cross and a former ski racer . In alpine skiing, the South Tyrolean mainly competed in the downhill , super-G and combined disciplines and switched to ski cross in 2012.

biography

Thanei drove his first FIS races in alpine skiing in January 1997, he started in the European Cup for the first time in January 2000. At the Junior World Championship in 2011 he was tenth in the downhill. Thanei contested the first race in the Alpine Ski World Cup in the 2003/04 season. In December 2004 he achieved World Cup points for the first time in the downhill from Bormio as 30th. On January 14, 2005 he came in 13th place in the combination in Wengen for the first time among the best 15. In this combination descent he reached 156.96 km / h, the highest current speed measured by the FIS in a race of the Alpine Ski World Cup . This record was again exceeded in January 2013 on the Lauberhorn in Wengen, initially in the combination descent by Carlo Janka and the day after increased by Johan Clarey in the special descent to 161.9 km / h. Thanei could not confirm this performance in the next races. In March 2005, Thanei was Italian downhill champion ahead of Kristian Ghedina and Peter Fill .

After Thanei had to pause the entire 2006/07 season due to a spinal disc operation, he made a comeback in the European Cup the following season . He celebrated his first three victories, finished second in the overall standings and won the super combination standings. In the World Cup he was only able to score again in December 2008. He achieved his best results in January 2009 in Kitzbühel , where he was eighth in the downhill and tenth in the combination. At the 2009 World Championships held in Val-d'Isère next month , he finished 15th in the Super-G, 16th in the Downhill and 21st in the Super Combined. However, he was not able to match these results afterwards, top 20 results in the World Cup remained the exception. In March 2009 he was Italian downhill champion for the second time. In March 2010, Thanei suffered fractures in his left fibula and ankle in a fall on the downhill run from Kvitfjell . In the following season 2010/11 further starts followed in the World Cup, in winter 2011/12 only starts in the European Cup.

In December 2011, Thanei took part in ski cross competitions for the first time at the World Cup races in Innichen . In addition to his assignments in the Alpine Ski Europe Cup, further starts in ski cross followed by the end of winter. At the beginning of April 2012 he became Italian champion in this discipline. After the 2011/12 season, Thanei decided to end his career in alpine skiing and finally switch to ski cross. He has been a member of the Italian national ski cross team since the 2012/13 season.
