Christian Greber (born February 8, 1972 in Mellau , Vorarlberg ) is a former Austrian ski racer . He specialized in the fast downhill and Super-G disciplines, won a World Cup race and took part in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City . A serious knee injury in October 2002 forced him to retire from his career. Greber is married to Cornelia Meusburger , a former ski racer .
Career
Greber gained his first international experience at the Junior World Championship in Geilo in 1991 , where he was ranked in all races, but did not achieve any top positions. He made his debut in the World Cup on December 29, 1993 in the downhill from Bormio . In the rest of the season he was used again in FIS races and in the European Cup . The next World Cup races followed in the 1994/95 season . Greber scored the first points on January 13, 1995 with rank 15 in the Hahnenkamm run on the Streif in Kitzbühel . On February 26th, he surprisingly reached third place in the Whistler Super-G . Greber could not confirm this result during the entire next winter and so he had to start again in the European Cup in the 1996/97 season . Here he achieved second place in the overall standings and in the downhill classification with a victory in the downhill from Haus and another four podium places, which gave him a fixed starting place in the World Cup for the next winter.
In the 1997/98 season Greber drove in eight of the eleven World Cup runs among the fastest 20 and achieved sixth place in Bormio as the best result. In the Downhill World Cup he finished 19th, but he could not keep his fixed starting position. So he had to start again in the European Cup in winter 1998/99, where he reached fifth place in the downhill classification and second in the Super G classification with four podium places. In the World Cup he was used in five downhill runs and achieved eighth place in Bormio as the best result. The 1999/2000 World Cup season began Greber with a fifth place in the downhill from Beaver Creek . After that, however, he was only twice in the top 15 until he achieved his second podium finish in third at the season finale in Bormio. In the Downhill World Cup, he finished 15th. In the 2000/01 season he was used more often in the European Cup, but he also achieved a good result in the World Cup with sixth place on the downhill from Kitzbühel.
With his training achievements in the summer of 2001, Greber finally secured a regular place in the World Cup team of Austrian downhill skiers. In the first three downhill runs of the 2001/02 season in Val-d'Isère and Gröden , he was always among the top ten and in the fourth downhill run in Bormio, Greber celebrated his first victory ahead of his teammates Fritz Strobl and Stephan Eberharter . With two further top 10 places in the second downhill from Bormio and at the end of the season in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee , he reached seventh place in the Downhill World Cup. With his first World Cup victory, Greber was also able to qualify for a major event for the first time within the Austrian team. At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , he finished sixth in the downhill.
On October 10, 2002, Greber was seriously injured during Super-G training on the Pitztal Glacier when he got stuck at a gate and fell down a steep slope. All the ligaments in his left knee and the patellar tendon tore, he was treated by Dr. Christian Schenk operated on for three hours. Greber had planned his civil wedding for the next day.
He had to take a break for the entire 2002/03 season and was only able to participate in training again in the summer of 2003, but after persistent knee problems he had to undergo another operation in November 2003. After he could not contest any races in the winter of 2003/04 either, he announced his retirement from top-class sport in April 2004 for health reasons.
Greber is currently head of racing for the ski company Head . On April 15, 2016, Greber was appointed by the ÖSV in the newly created position of sporting director for young talent in the alpine area (beginning May 2016).
