Leanne Smith (born May 28, 1987 in North Conway , New Hampshire ) is a former American ski racer . She specialized in the downhill , super-G and combination disciplines.

biography

Smith took part in their first FIS races in December 2002 , and from November 2004 they played in the Nor-Am Cup , the North American continental championship. After a year at the University of New Hampshire , she interrupted her studies in 2006 to focus entirely on skiing. In the 2006/07 season she was the overall winner of the Nor-Am Cup; In addition, there was victory in the Super G classification.

On December 1, 2007, Smith contested her first World Cup race, the Lake Louise downhill . She achieved 23rd place and got World Cup points right away. The next day she finished 19th in the Super-G for the first time among the top 20. In the 2009/10 season she was among the fastest 20 in four World Cup races and reached 15th place on the downhill from Cortina d'Ampezzo on January 23, 2010 . her best result of the season. She also won a European Cup downhill run in Caspoggio and was American downhill champion. At the 2010 Winter Olympics , she was 18th in the Super-G and 21st in the Super Combined.

Smith reached her first Top 10 World Cup result on January 21, 2011 with eighth place in the Super-G of Cortina d'Ampezzo. At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , she only finished 19th in Super-G, while she failed or was disqualified in Downhill and Super Combined. At the end of the 2011/12 World Cup season , in which she mostly achieved results similar to the previous year, Smith achieved her best ever World Cup result with fifth place in the Super-G in Schladming . She achieved her first podium on December 14, 2012, finishing second on the downhill from Val-d'Isère . Another podium followed on January 19, 2013 with third place in the downhill from Cortina d'Ampezzo .

In the 2013/14 season , a sixth place was Smith's best World Cup result. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, she was ranked 18th in the Super-G. Due to injury, she had to break off the 2014/15 season after a short time, while she even had to skip the 2015/16 season entirely. Smith attempted a comeback in the 2016/17 season, but was far from building on her earlier performances. Finally, on April 22, 2017, she announced her retirement from top-class sport.
