Marija Kirkowa ( Bulgarian Мария Киркова ; English Maria Kirkova ; born January 3, 1986 in Sofia ) is a Bulgarian ski racer . It has taken part in four World Championships and three Olympic Games so far and has competed in the World Cup since 2006 .

Career

After great success in school and junior races, Kirkowa contested her first FIS race in January 2002 . In February 2003, the then 17-year-old took part in the slalom of the World Championships in St. Moritz . With a gap of more than 18 seconds she came in 43rd place directly behind her teammate Borijana Slatarewa . Shortly afterwards she celebrated her first victory in an FIS race in a giant slalom in Macedonia. By 2011 she had almost 40 more victories in FIS races, mainly in Bulgaria. In March 2003 Kirkowa took part in the Junior World Championship , but only came in 50th place in the giant slalom. In the slalom, she failed in the second round. After a broken leg in April 2003, she was unable to contest races for almost ten months.

From the 2005/2006 season to the 2008/2009 season, Kirkowa also started sporadically in the European Cup and World Cup , but she did not make it into the points in either of the two racing series. In the European Cup, she achieved the best result in her first race, the St. Sebastian slalom on December 17, 2005, which she finished in 33rd place. In the World Cup, her best result was 35th place in the downhill from Bansko on February 27, 2009. In her slalom and giant slalom races in the World Cup, she was never able to qualify for the second round. After three years without European Cup and World Cup races, Kirkowa again took part in four European Cup races in Sella Nevea and the World Cup Super G in Bansko in February 2012 , where she was 43rd and last.

In February 2006, Kirkowa was the only Bulgarian to take part in alpine competitions at the Olympic Winter Games in Turin . She only started in the slalom, but dropped out after finishing 41st in the first run in the second run. She was also the only participant from Bulgaria at her next two world championships. At the 2007 World Championships in Åre , she came 44th in giant slalom and 45th in slalom. At the 2009 World Championships in Val-d'Isère , she achieved her best results in international championships with 22nd place in the Super Combined and 28th place in the Super-G. In the giant slalom she could not qualify for the second run and in the slalom she was eliminated in the first run. Kirkowa's next major event was the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver . There she started - again as the only Bulgarian - in all disciplines except the super combined, but only crossed the finish line once as 33rd of the downhill. At the 2011 World Cup in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , she was once again the only female representative of her country. She started in slalom and giant slalom, finished 51st in giant slalom, but was eliminated in slalom. At the Bulgarian championships, Kirkowa has won 13 titles since 2007.
