On October 10, 2008, the Canadian suffered a cruciate ligament rupture and further knee injuries during a training fall on the Pitztal Glacier in Tyrol , which is why she was unable to take part in any competitions during the entire winter. She contested her first race after a year-long injury break on November 30, 2009. While Terwiel used to regularly compete in Super-G and Super Combined, and less often in the downhill, since the injury she only competes in slalom and giant slalom . With another two top 5 results, she reached fourth place in the slalom classification in the 2009/2010 season . Almost exactly one year after her first Nor-Am victory, she won the slalom in Panorama again on December 15, 2010. With three further podium places, she reached third place in the slalom classification in the 2010/2011 season. In the same winter, the Canadian also took part in two World Cup races for the first time , but could not qualify for the second round in any of these slaloms.

Terwiel has been studying at the University of Vermont in Burlington , USA, since autumn 2011 . On December 18, 2011, she won her first and only World Cup points in the 2011/2012 season with 23rd place in the Courchevel slalom . In the Nor-Am Cup this winter , she won the slalom classification with two podium places and another five top 10 placements.
