Giethoorn is a village of around 2,600 inhabitants in the province of Overijssel , Netherlands . Administratively it belongs together with Steenwijk, Vollenhove and Blokzijl to the municipality of Steenwijkerland . It is also called "the Venice of the North " because of the many canals in the town . This eight kilometer long village meandered around a village canal (Dorpsgracht) lies on the edge of the nature reserve "De Wieden".
The houses stand on hills and often still have the typical thatched roofs with a curved camel shape. The village is criss-crossed by numerous cross channels. The characteristic wooden bridges of this "water village" are built over the canals . Giethoorn is located in the largest lowland moor area in Western Europe, to which the Weerribben-Wieden National Park belongs. The car-free Giethoorn is a tourist attraction that is visited by more than 1 million tourists a year.
The stream of visitors was triggered from 1958 by the film “Fanfare” by director Bert Haanstra (German title: “... and the music blows to it”), which was shot in Giethoorn and was seen by 2.6 million viewers in Dutch cinemas.
In 1942 there was traffic in Giethoorn almost exclusively by boat.
In March 2015 it was announced that Giethoorn would be the only village on the board of the renewed world version of Monopoly . In an international vote, it was able to secure a wildcard alongside Madrid . This makes the Netherlands the only country that is represented on the board with two fields, as Amsterdam was able to qualify alongside Giethoorn .
