Location of Ootmarsum in the municipality of Dinkelland |
Ootmarsum is a place in the Twente region . It belongs to the municipality of Dinkelland in the Dutch province of Overijssel . The population is around 4,500 (as of January 1, 2017).
history
The death of Bishop Radbod von Utrecht in Ootmarsum is documented for the year 917 . At that time there was already a small church or chapel in the village.
As a hub for trade from West-Nederland to North Germany, the place gained in importance and received city rights in 1314 , which included the right to hold a fair and the construction of defenses. Around 1600 the defenses were demolished along with two city gates.
Oomarsum also gained importance as an administrative center. It housed the episcopal Lehnhof and the commander of the Teutonic Order .
The place could hardly benefit from the industrial revolution due to the lack of transport connections - neither canal nor railroad ran through Ootmarsum. Therefore, the city has retained its medieval appearance to this day.
On March 22, 2001, the previously independent place was incorporated into the community of Denekamp.
tourism
Today Ootmarsum is known as the art city of the Dutch East with its many galleries. Leading the way is the Dutch painter Ton Schulten , who built an art museum in the center of town in 2013 at great expense.
