history
The region on the Meuse has been known since 2000 BC. Settled by the Gauls . The name Megen probably comes from the Gallic word magos (plain, market), which was Latinized to magus . Megen or Meginus was first mentioned in 721, but only received city and customs rights from Willem Dicbier in 1357 . Shortly afterwards a fortress was built, of which the prison tower is still preserved today.
In 1645 the Franciscan order established a monastery and a Latin school. The Poor Clares followed in 1721 with the construction of the Sint-Josephsberg Monastery after they had been expelled from Boxtel five years earlier .
In 1875 a mill was built.
