Warmenhuizen is a village in the municipality of Schagen , in the Dutch province of North Holland . In the West Frisian dialect , the place is called Warmehui'ze or Wermehúze . In the region , the village is also known as Warmetuut .

The originally agricultural village has been increasingly inhabited by commuters since around 1970. Warmenhuizen was an independent municipality until 1990, after which it was assigned to the municipality of Harenkarspel . This was dissolved in 2013 together with Zijpe and added to the municipality of Schagen. Around 6,100 people lived in the village in 2017.

history

Warmenhuizen is said to have been founded in 745 by King Radboud II of Friesland through the creation of the first Halligen ( terpenes ) in the region. It is known that the area was ruled by the Counts of Holland until at least 1254. Together with the town of Harenkarspel, which is now called Kerkbuurt, the village came into the possession of the Egmond family in 1256 .

The last count of this house to own the area was Lamoral von Egmond . His widow Sabine von Pfalz-Simmern acquired the area in which the village is located around 1576 after the count had been beheaded in 1568. Her son Philip inherited the area, but lost it again after choosing the side of the defeated Spaniards in the Eighty Years' War . After Philip's death in 1590, his family member Lamoral II von Egmont was awarded the territories, but with the condition that they had to settle in France . Due to serious money problems, he could not hold the area long. His property was sold to the states of Holland and West Friesland , which in turn resold it in 1607 to Messrs. Gybels and Van der Elburch for 10,050 guilders .

Buildings

The foundation stone for the Oude Ursulakerk in Warmenhuizen was laid in the 13th century. The church has been used by the Protestant community since the Reformation . The clock in the church tower originally comes from a church tower that collapsed in 1779 in the neighboring municipality of Schoorl . In addition to church services, exhibitions and concerts are held in the church.

Not to be confused with the Oude Ursulakerk is the Roman Catholic Sint-Ursula en Gezellinnenkerk, built in 1872. This building, designed in the neo-romantic style, was designed by the architect Theo Asseler.

The village hostel De Moriaan was first mentioned in 1589 and now houses a restaurant.

In the area around Warmenhuizen, near the village of Huiskebuurt, there is a classic polder mill. This windmill, called De Grebmolen , dates from 1875.

Sports

The village is known nationwide for its many athletes. Among other things, the cyclist Steven Rooks , winner of the spotted jersey at the Tour de France 1988 , lived in Warmenhuizen.

The VIOS Warmenhuizen football club, founded in 1927, is located in the village.
