Philip of Egmond

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philip von Egmond (* 1558 at La Hamaide Castle in Hainaut , † March 14, 1590 near Ivry ) came from the Dutch high nobility of the Egmonds . He was the fifth Count of Egmond , Prince of Gavere , Baron of Gaesbeek , and the army of Purmerend , Purmerland and Ilpendam .

Philip was born as the seventh child, but the first son, of Lamoral von Egmond and Sabine von Pfalz-Simmern at La Hamaide Castle in Hainaut. After the execution of his father, William of Orange took over the guardianship of the young prince. He was married to Maria van Horne , but the marriage remained childless. Egmond offered his services to King Philip II of Spain - who was his great-uncle - and conquered various cities and fortresses for him. For this he was accepted into the order of the Golden Fleece by Philip II .

On March 14, 1590, Philip of Egmond fell in the battle of Ivry against the French King Henry IV.

After Philip's death, his younger brother Lamoral II was appointed by Egmond as his title heir.
