Callantsoog is a coastal town in the municipality of Schagen , North Holland ( Netherlands ), with 2,440 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). Until the end of 2012, the place belonged to the municipality of Zijpe .

The place is about fifteen kilometers south of Den Helder ; The nearest town (and train station) inland is Schagen, a good ten kilometers away. There is a bus connection there via line 152. In the summer months , line 851, known as Zomerlijn , also runs between Petten and Den Helder every hour .

The history of the settlement can be traced back over 1000 years. Due to floods and shifting dunes, their location was unsafe until the beginning of modern times. At times the village was on an island and was called Callinghe op 't Oghe . The forerunner of the current place, which was about 3 km from today's coastline, went down in the All Saints flood of 1570.

Callantsoog is now a popular holiday destination for Dutch and German tourists. There is an office of the VVV , several hotels, holiday apartments and private accommodation in the village ; There are extensive campsites and bungalow parks in the surrounding area.

The sandy beach is located directly behind the dunes and can be reached via the four beach exits “Abbestee”, “Seinpost”, “Dorpsplein” and “Kiefteglop”. In 1973 the first Dutch nudist beach was opened in Callantsoog . The "Seinpost" dune in the village is considered the highest sand dune in North Holland.

The Zwanenwater nature reserve is located in the south of the village .

A supermarket, a few specialty shops and various boutiques offer shopping opportunities. There are several restaurants (not all open all year round) with different cuisines, including Chinese, Italian, Mexican or Brazilian.

Cultural facilities include a small library, a local museum and a church used by both denominations. It is the oldest building in town and is said to have a bell that was cast in Rotterdam as early as 1491.

The local history museum "Tante Jaantje" is the last of the original 13, West Frisian farms (so-called Dünenstolp-Boerderij; "stolp" = bell-shaped architectural style), which formed the village center (today: Dorpsplein). He is over 100 years old. During the Second World War, one of the last farms burned down; In 1946 the penultimate courtyard was demolished. So only this Boerderij was preserved. The name goes back to the mother of the last owner, who was always called that way in the village. It shows rural life at the time, a wide variety of flotsam, the development of dike construction and protection, archaeological and historical finds (including the British-Russian invasion of Holland in 1799) and a presentation of the Dutch life-saving company KNRM .

In Callantsoog, however, there is no bank (only ATMs) or a petrol station, which can only be found in the neighboring villages of Groote Keeten and De Stolpen .
