Arnoldus Senguerdius

Arnoldus Senguerdius (also: Arnold Senguerd, Senkward ; * 1610 in Amsterdam ; † March 8, 1668 ibid) was a Dutch physicist and philosopher.

Life

Senguerdius initially studied theology at the University of Leiden and, inspired by Franco Petri Burgersdijck (1590–1635), concentrated on philosophy. At the age of 19, he acquired a master's degree in philosophy and moved to Franeker University , where he attended the lectures of Johannes Maccovius and Guilielmus Amesius (William Ames; 1576–1633). After acquiring theological qualifications, he performed in various congregations. However, in 1635 the magistrate in Utrecht appointed him to the Illustre grammar school , where he lectured on metaphysics as a lecturer.

In 1638 he became associate professor and in 1639 full professor of metaphysics and physics at the University of Utrecht . In 1641 he switched to the professorship of philosophy and received the title of professor honorarius. Especially the philosophy of Aristotle was the subject of his teaching. After he had become rector of the Alma Mater in 1645/46 , he took Caspar van Baerle's position as professor of philosophy at the Athenaeum Illustre Amsterdam , where he was also appointed librarian and worked until the end of his life.

The son Wolferdus Senguerdius comes from his marriage to Cornelia Webber , who also gained importance.
