Wolferdus Senguderius

Wolferdus Senguerdius (also: Wolfgang Senkward, Wolferd Senguerd ; * July 4, 1646 in Utrecht , † January 26, 1724 in Leiden ) was a Dutch natural philosopher .

Life

The son of Arnoldus Senguerdius completed his studies in philosophy at the University of Leiden in 1667 with the promotion of Doctor of Philosophy from. Two years later he acquired the right to give lectures in the philosophy faculty of the university. Soon it gained a reputation for being a supporter of the traditionalist party . Still, his natural philosophy turned out to be a strange mixture of obstructive traditionalism, Cartesianism, atomism and experimentation. After making extraordinary progress in this, he was appointed associate professor of philosophy on February 20, 1675 and full professor of natural philosophy on January 16, 1676 at the University of Leiden. He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leiden University and was Rector of the Alma Mater in 1685/86, 1691/92, 1701/02, 1715/16 .

On the side he had been engaged in legal studies and on September 29, 1681 obtained his doctorate in law at the University of Utrecht . As the successor to Friedrich Spanheim , he also took over the librarianship of the Leiden University on August 8, 1701. He gave clear demonstrations of physics and developed the air pump invented by Otto von Guericke and improved by Robert Boyle . As a Senguerd air pump , it had a name for a long time in the technology world of that time. The Philosophia naturalis is considered to be his most important major work.
