Josephus Joannes Maria van der Ven ( JJM 'Joop'; born October 14, 1907 in Arnheim , Netherlands ; † May 10, 1988 in Cologne ) was a Dutch lawyer .

Life

Van der Ven studied and received his doctorate at the Catholic University in Nijmegen . In 1947 he became associate professor for labor law at the University of Utrecht , in 1950 full professor for social law , legal sociology and legal philosophy . In 1969/70 he was rector .

Immediately after the Second World War , van der Ven (then a junior trainee) and several other Catholic intellectuals took on the task of rebuilding the relationship between the German and Dutch academic circles. He was giving a lecture on this at the University of Munich as early as 1946, although such trips were not easy at the time and this project was met with incomprehension in Holland.

Van der Ven was active until the end of his life as a visiting professor ( Münster ), as a multilingual speaker, participant in countless congresses, meetings etc. in Germany, Austria and widely in Europe.

Catholic

Van der Ven was not only a lawyer and philosopher at a state university, but also interested in theological issues and the life of the Roman Catholic Church in the Netherlands through publications and voluntary work.

In the ecclesiastical field, van der Ven could be seen as 'progressive' in his younger years (in theology, ecumenism, etc.). After the 1960s, with the strong polarization within the Roman Catholic Church in the Netherlands, he disagreed with many changes in theology, liturgy, ecclesiastical discipline and practice. He rejected polarization (in church, in politics, in society).

He died unexpectedly in Cologne, on the way to Munich to visit his colleague Arthur Kaufmann , whom he had known since 1946 and who had just retired as a professor at a symposium.

Awards

In 1972, he was awarded University of Munich , the honorary doctorate , and shortly before his death that gave him Gorres Society as the first and so far the only Dutchman to their Ring of Honor , Van der Ven is also connected to the 1976 Great Cross of Merit was awarded and Pope John Paul II. Appointed him Commander of the Order of St. Gregory the Great .
