Henricus Pontanus

Henricus Pontanus (born December 29, 1652 in Steinfurt , † September 15, 1714 in Utrecht ) was a German Reformed theologian.

Life

Pontanus had attended the Arnoldinum Academic High School in Steinfurt and began studying philosophy and literature at the University of Groningen in 1669 . In 1675 he became pastor in Meppel and at the same time rector of the school there. In 1679 he went to Lingen as a pastor , where he also worked at the local trivial school . From Lingen he supported Wilhelm III of Orange , who initiated the establishment of the Georgianum academic high school on September 14, 1697 . At the educational institution he co-founded, he was also a professor and its founding rector from 1697 to 1700.

After he had received an honorary doctorate in theology at the University of Leiden on November 10, 1699 , he was appointed professor of theology at the University of Utrecht on February 15, 1700 . He took up this office on March 13 of the same year with the speech De columna nubis et ignis . In Utrecht he also took part in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht Academy and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1702/03 . However, since he could not meet the demands of a theological professor, he was dismissed from his professorship at his request and took over the professorship of church history on February 25, 1704, which he held until the end of his life.
