Bernardus Franciscus Suerman (also: Bernhard Franz Suermann ; * October 4, 1783 in Haarlem ; † February 11, 1862 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch medic.

Life

The son of the surgeon Herman Suerman and his wife Agnes Mourus had already lost their parents at the age of twelve. Initially he was educated at the French school in his native town, but after the death of his parents he was trained by a doctor, where he perfected his knowledge of anatomy, Latin and Greek. The training was so good that he was able to win an advertised prize with the De hedendaagsche oefenende heelkunde van Gesscher . 1799 - during the British-Russian occupation attempt in North Holland - he worked as a volunteer in the hospitals of Haarlem. Here he earned his first services in transporting the wounded to Leiden by ship.

After he married Guilelmine Gilette Susanne du Houx de Cramaut, daughter of the preacher of the Walloon Church in Haarlem, in 1807, he went to Utrecht University to study medicine. Here was Matthias van Steevens Geuns his teacher. On July 31, 1809 he received his doctorate with the inaugural dissertation De arsenici in corpore humano effectibus ejusque usu hodie celebrato medico, praesertim ad carcinomatis curationem as a doctor of medicine. He was then appointed professor of medicine, surgery and obstetrics at the University of Harderwijk on May 9, 1809 . He was appointed to this office on September 13, 1809, and on May 9, 1810, he began this assigned task with the speech Oratio de iis, quae imprimis Batavi, cum veteres tum recentiores et Germani de vitae corporeae principio philosophati sunt (Harderwijk 1810) .

After the Gelderische Hochschule was closed, he worked as a general practitioner in Apeldoorn . After the restoration of the University of Utrecht in 1815, he received a medical professorship there, which he received on January 10, 1816 with the speech De magnatismo, qui vocatur animali, veteribus omnino incognito, nostra demum aetate invento, si bene adhibeatur, novum fortasse physiologis lumen et salutare medicis remedium aliquando allaturo (Utrecht 1816) began. Here he gave lectures on anatomy, pathology and surgery, where he handed the anatomy in 1827 to Jacobus Ludovicus Conradus Schroeder van der Kolk (1797-1862). In addition, he had participated in the state committee for research and was a member of the physiological and medical society.

After his death, he left his medical cabinet to the Utrecht university collections. In addition, he had also participated in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht University. On March 26, 1827, as rector of the Alma Mater, he gave the speech De animi fortitudine virtute medicis propria, maxime illa in epidemiis conspicua (Utrecht 1828) and on March 26, 1848 on the same occasion the speech De emendanda artis salutaris institutione academica legis medicae in patria nostra ferendae fundamento praecipuo (Utrecht 1848). At the age of seventy he retired in 1853.
