Jacobus Ludovicus Conradus Schroeder van der Kolk , also: Jacob Ludwig Konrad Schröder (born March 14, 1797 in Leeuwarden , † May 2, 1862 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch physician and professor of anatomy and physiology.

Life

Schroeder van der Kolk was the son of the doctor in Leeuwarden Hendrik Willem van der Kolk (born November 23, 1768 in Wommels, † November 28, 1819 ibid) and Wilhelmina Philippina Catherina Schroeder, daughter of the Professor of Law in Groningen Ludwig Konrad Schröder ( * October 8, 1724 in Marburg; † October 25, 1801 in Groningen). He attended school in Wommels and received training from Pastor Konig in Dronrijp . At a young age he developed an interest in the natural sciences. He was enrolled at the University of Groningen on November 11, 1811 , where he won a prize in 1815 for his work Quae sunt emolumenta praecipua, quae ex calorico latente seu ligato aëris et aquae ad oeconomiam animalem redundant . On June 17, 1820, he received his doctorate in Groningen with a dissertation on blood circulation, Dissertatio physiologica-medica inauguralis, sistens sanguinis coagulantis historiam, cum experimentis ad eam illustrandam institutis, and he established himself as a doctor in Hoorn that same year .

In 1821 he became a doctor at the foreign hospital (Buitengasthuis) in Amsterdam, where he made a name for himself through numerous publications and through his work. On October 18, 1826, he was given the professorship of medicine at the University of Utrecht , which he took up on February 28, 1827 with the introductory speech De anatomiae pathologicae praecipue subtilioris studio utilissimo et ad morborum naturam investigandam maxime commendando . In Utrecht he was charged with the inspection of the insane asylum there. He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht University and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1836/37 . In 1845 he discovered elastin fibers in the sputum of "consumption addicts ", which was an important indicator of tuberculosis in lung tissue. He carried out reforming development work in the field of psychiatry in the Netherlands and campaigned for the treatment of alcoholism as a disease.

Schroeder was a member of several learned societies at home and abroad. In 1832 he became a corresponding and in 1846 a full member of the Koninklijk Nederlandsch Instituut van Wetenschappen, Letteren en Schoone Kunsten , he was a member of the provincial Utrecht Academy of Arts and Sciences, in 1842 he became a member of the Académie Royale de Médicine de Belgique (ARMB) and in 1856 a member of the royal Swedish Academy of Sciences . He was a member of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors . In 1860 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . He was also made a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion , in 1855 he became a Knight of the Swedish North Star Order and in 1856 Commander of the Order of the Oak Crown . After a short period of suffering, he died. With great sympathy, he was buried on May 29, 1865 in the Utrecht cemetery, where a monument was erected for him.

His first marriage was on July 7, 1830 in Rotterdam with Cornelia Templeman van der Hoeven (born November 18, 1809 in Rotterdam, † September 17, 1832 in Utrecht), the daughter of Thomas Bastiaan Templeman van der Hoeven and Kornelia Elisabeth Zwartendijk . His second marriage was on May 15, 1835 in Utrecht with Geertruida Elisabeth Schroeder (born August 2, 1810 in Enkhuizen; † February 12, 1853 in Utrecht), the daughter of the Utrecht professor Johannes Friedrich Ludwig Schröder and his wife Margaretha Anthonia Heemskerk, a.
