Cornelis Hubertus Carolus Grinwis

Cornelis Hubertus Carolus Grinwis (born March 9, 1831 in Haarlem , † December 25, 1899 in Baarn ) was a Dutch mathematician and physicist.

Life

He was the son of Pieter Thomas Grinwis and his wife Wilhelmina Josina Fullink. Grinwis studied since July 26, 1853 at the University of Utrecht and received his doctorate on the subject of Specimen physicomathematicum de distributione fluidi electrici in superficie conductoris on July 3, 1858 as a doctor of philosophy. In 1857 he had already become a teacher of mathematics at the grammar school in Deventer and in 1859 he switched to the grammar school in Delft in the same position . By royal decree he was on April 23, 1861 lecturer in physics at the Royal Academy for Civil Engineers in Delft and on June 29, 1864 he was a professor at the newly founded Polytechnic School.

On June 21, 1867 he took up the professorship in mathematical physics at the University of Utrecht with the speech Over de waarde der wiskunde voor de beoefening der physica (On the value of mathematics for the practice of physics). Grinwis set the focus of his work primarily on the field of mathematical physics, the difficulties of which he sought to solve. In 1869 a mathematical theory for calculating the friction power was created. On May 3, 1869 he became a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences . In 1875/76 he took over the rectorate of the Utrecht University. In 1895 he had to resign from his professorship for health reasons. He moved to Baarn, where he died four years later.

Grinwis was married to Josina Johanna Baaltje van Kerkwijk.
