Paulus Voet

Life

The son of Gisbert Voetius and Deliana Jans (1591–1679) had received the name of his grandfather. In the summer of 1634 his father was called to Utrecht, where he moved with him. Here Paul completed his studies in philosophy and law. After four years of study, he obtained the degree of master's degree in philosophy on June 7, 1640. After that he seems to have built a reputation as a scholar. When an attempt was made to move him to Deventer , the curators of the university decided on March 19, 1641, to appoint him as an extraordinary professor of metaphysics, which he took up on May 24, 1641.

Here he established himself as a supporter of his father and was later an opponent of the philosophy of René Descartes . On June 17, 1644 he took over the full professorship in metaphysics. In addition, he occupied himself with legal studies and completed his doctorate in law on March 4, 1645. On April 10, 1648 he was given the professorship of logic and the Greek language, he was appointed associate professor in 1652 and full professor of law on April 21, 1654. He was also a councilor in the Viane district court. As a law professor, he had laid the foundations of private international law when he was concerned with the question of why a sovereign state should apply foreign law in its territory. He is stepping out of the old type of the Italian-French school, to the newer Comitas Gentium . Voet also took part in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht University and was its rector in 1652/53 .

Johannes Voet (1647–1713), a son of Paulus Voet, also became a legal scholar and taught from 1674 in Utrecht and from 1780 in Leiden .
