Johannes Luyts (also: Jan Luit ; born September 19, 1655 in Hoorn ; † March 12, 1721 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch mathematician, philosopher, astronomer and physicist.

Life

Luyts had attended the Latin school in his hometown. He enrolled on April 17, 1673 at the University of Leiden , where Antonius Hulsius (1615–1685), Wolferdus Senguerdius and Gerardus de Vries were his teachers. When the latter moved to the University of Utrecht , he followed this in 1676 and on June 29, 1677 acquired the academic degree of Master of Philosophy. In the same year, on October 29, 1677, he was appointed associate professor of physics and mathematics.

After taking up the position on December 11, 1677, he became a full professor of physics and mathematics on February 9, 1680. In this capacity he also took part in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht Academy and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1688/89 . Luyts lived a secluded life and was never married. He was a follower of the philosophical school of Aristotle and was an opponent of the Cartesian philosophy of René Descartes .
