Gerardus de Vries

Gerardus de Vries (also: Gerhard von Vries , Gerard de Vries ; * August 15, 1648 in Utrecht , † December 1, 1705 ibid) was a Dutch philosopher and Reformed theologian.

Life

Nothing is known about Vrie's parental home, nor about the first years of his life. In 1659 he can be proven as a pupil of the Hieronymus School in Utrecht in the class Septanorum (9th subclass). In 1667 he enrolled under the rectorate of Johann Georg Graevius at the University of Utrecht . Here he completed studies at the philosophical faculty and heard lectures at the theological faculty with Gisbert Voetius . On April 28, 1671, he continued his philosophical studies at the University of Leiden , where on May 28, 1671 he acquired the degree of Master of Philosophy.

Soon afterwards he returned to Utrecht to give private lectures as a lecturer. The events of the Dutch-French War forced him to leave Utrecht. He moved again to Leiden on September 8, 1673, where he continued his lectures and in December of the same year received a position at the Staten-Collegium. On May 11, 1674 he was appointed professor of logic and metaphysics at the University of Utrecht, which position he took up on September 1, 1674 with the speech Prologus de sectis philosophorum, inprimis hodiernis . As an Aristotelian, he took the position that the divinity of scripture could be proven otherwise than by reason.

He also tried to convey this to his students, but it was precisely because of this conviction that other scholars such as Frans Burman questioned it. In addition, Vries was on March 4, 1685 associate professor of theology. As such, he established himself as a methodically conservative, eclectic supporter of the closer Reformation of Gisbert Voetius and as an opponent of the Cartesian philosophy of René Descartes . He died unmarried and decreed in his will that he would be buried in silence and that no funeral sermon should be given to him. As a university lecturer in Utrecht, he also took part in the organizational tasks of the academy and was rector of the alma mater in 1678/79 and 1692/93 .
