Life

The son of pastor Peter Burman (1577-1630) and his second wife Josina Balde (* June 14, 1601; † May 23, 1667) had his first education in Emmerich am Rhein. After the death of his father, he moved with his mother to Leiden, where Frans began his academic training on January 24, 1643 at the school of the Staten-Collegium under Festus Hommius . He completed his theological studies with Christian Wittich (1625–1687) and at the age of 20 he met René Descartes , with whom he had a profound conversation. At the age of 22 he took over a ministerial post in the Reformed congregation in Hanau in 1650 and returned to Leiden in 1651 as sub-rector of the State College, which he took up on September 17 with the speech de Collegiis theologicis et philosophicis (Leiden 1673).

On October 23, 1661, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in theology by the University of Leiden . On July 26, 1662 he was appointed professor of theological dogmatics at the University of Utrecht , which office he assumed on November 12, 1662 with the speech Oratio de doctrina Cristiana . He also became a preacher in Utrecht in 1664 and in 1671 he took over the professorship for church history. As an academic teacher he also took part in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht University and was rector of the alma mater in 1664/65 and 1670/71.

As a theologian he tried the federal theological and salvation-historical interpretation of the biblical writings, which was influential in Dutch Protestantism and based on the idea of the threefold covenant of God (Adam, Moses, Christ), and which was founded by Johannes Coccejus (1603–1669), with the foundations of the Cartesian Connect philosophy of Descartes. His main work Synopsis theologiae was one of the more important achievements of the federalist and at the same time Cartesian school. In the theological controversy, he had to face some hostility from his colleagues. Johann Georg Graevius gave him the funeral oration and collected his academic speeches (Utrecht 1700).

From his marriage on March 17, 1665 to Maria, daughter of Abraham Heidanus (1597–1678), there were four children. One daughter and three sons. Of these, Frans Burman (1671–1719) and Pieter Burman the Elder gained importance as professors.
