Herman Snellen the Younger (born November 24, 1864 in Utrecht , † September 30, 1929 in The Hague ) was a Dutch ophthalmologist .

Life

Herman was the son of the ophthalmologist Herman Snellen . After attending the municipal grammar school in Utrecht, he enrolled on January 24, 1882 University of Utrecht to study medical sciences. In addition to his father, he had, among other things, enjoyed the lessons of Franciscus Cornelis Donders . On April 9, 1892, he received his doctorate under his father with the thesis Netvlies-aandoeningen bij naphtaline-vergiftiging (German: Retinal disorders in naphthalene poisoning ) as a doctor of medicine. From 1898 he worked as a lecturer at the Utrecht University and was the second director of the ophthalmological clinic there. After having published a handbook for eye examinations under the title Handleiding bij het Oogheelkundig Onderzoek (Groningen, 1898), Snellen was appointed professor of ophthalmology at the Utrecht University on February 9, 1899, which he did on April 14, 1899 with the speech Over het waarnemen van licht en kleuren (German: About the perception of light and color ).

In 1903 he was the first director to take over the management of the Utrecht Eye Clinic and mainly dealt with strabismus and skiascopy . Several articles have appeared on this in the medical journals of the Netherlands, for example in the Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde. In addition, he participated in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht educational institution and was rector of the alma mater in the academy year 1914/15 , for which on the 279th anniversary of the same on March 26, 1915 he gave the rector's speech Dwaalbegrippen omtrent de physiologie van het gezichtszintuig (German: Irrbegriffe on the physiology of the sense of sight ). In 1914 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Groningen , in 1915 he became a member of the Genootschap tot bevordering van natuur-, genees- en heelkunde in Amsterdam and in 1928 he became a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion . For health reasons, he resigned his professorship on February 6, 1928 and held his farewell lecture on March 1 of the same year. Then he moved to The Hague, where he still ran an ophthalmological practice.

Snellen married on August 9, 1900 in Utrecht Maria Magdalena Werker (born April 26, 1880 in Utrecht; † October 3, 1956 in Utrecht), the daughter of Wilhelmus Martinus Johannes Werker (born March 4, 1843 in Amsterdam; † 12. February 1927 in De Bilt) and his wife Maria Catharina Roszberger, who married on August 6, 1878 in Amsterdam (born July 15, 1856 in Amsterdam; † August 9, 1915 in De Bilt). The daughter Maria C. Snellen (born October 4, 1916 in Utrecht) came from the marriage and married Albert Hidding on April 6, 1940 in Hoogezand.
