Jacobus Adrianus Cornelis van Leeuwen (born February 9, 1870 in Vlaardingen , † August 13, 1930 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian.

Life

Jacobus Adrianus Cornelis was the son of the former pastor and later professor of theology in Utrecht Everardus Henricus van Leeuwen (born March 14, 1833 in Zaltbommel; † March 9, 1913 in Haarlem) and his wife Adriana Maria Theodora Repelius (born February 11, 1843 in Echteld; † February 5, 1912 in Velp). He had attended grammar school in Zutphen and in 1888 began studying theology at the University of Utrecht . Here he received his doctorate on April 11, 1894 under Jacob Cramer on the subject of De Joodsche achtergrond van den brief aan de Romeinen (German: The Jewish background of the letter to the Romans ) as a doctor of theology. In the same year he received a pastor's post in Avereest and in 1903 went to Alkmaar in the same position .

In 1908 he was appointed professor of theology at the Utrecht University, where he was given the teaching position for the encyclopedia of theology, early Christian literature and exegesis of the New Testament . To this end, he gave the introductory speech on December 7th of that year, Literatuur èn Schriftuur (German: literature and writing ). In the academy year 1921/22 he was rector of the Alma Mater , was editor of the journal Theologische Studien and held numerous offices in the Reformed Church. He was a prelate , chairman of the reformed parish schools and chairman of the headquarters of the reformed Dutch churches. In 1929 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Reformed Theological Faculty of the University of Debrecen for his services to the Hungarian Protestant Church .

Van Leeuwen married on April 26, 1894 in Utrecht with Wilhelmina Johanna Josina Maria Bronsveld (born February 19, 1867 in Charlois; † September 3, 1943 in Utrecht), the daughter of pastor Andries Willem Bronsveld (born January 16, 1839 in Harderwijk ; † November 30, 1924 in Utrecht) and his wife Catharina Cornelia Clarisse (born January 23, 1843 in Harderwijk; † February 14, 1921 in Utrecht). There are children from the marriage. From the children we know:

  • Catharina Cornelia van Leeuwen (born June 2, 1896 in Avereest) married. May 12, 1923 in De Bilt with Bernd Dietrich Hans von Arnim (born September 8, 1899 in Rostock; † February 5, 1946 in Graz)
  • Adriana Maria Theodora van Leeuwen (born August 3, 1898 in Avereest) married. January 30, 1922 in Utrecht (closed May 27, 1952 ibid.) With Martinus Cornelis Slotemaker de Bruine (born June 17, 1897 in Beilen; † May 14, 1986 in Wassenaar)
  • Elisabeth Henriette van Leeuwen (born January 2, 1903 in Avereest, † October 14, 1989 in Bilthoven) married. March 3, 1927 in Utrecht with Floris Egbertus Vos (born May 1, 1903 in Utrecht; † September 9, 1988 in Bilthoven)
