Johannes Philippus Suijling

Johannes Philippus Suijling also: Jan Philip Suyling (born September 4, 1869 in 's-Hertogenbosch , † June 14, 1962 in The Hague ) was a Dutch legal scholar.

Life

Johannes Philippus was the son of the fishmonger Jacobus Suijling (born March 25, 1837 in 's-Hertogenbosch; † October 20, 1891 ibid) and his wife Maria Pieternella Baggerman (* around 1840 in Driel; † November 24, 1909 in The Hague) . After attending the grammar school in his place of birth, he enrolled on October 17, 1888 at the University of Utrecht , where he studied law. On December 4, 1893, he received his doctorate under Hendrik Jacobus Hamaker with the work De statutentheorie in Nederland gedurende de XVIIe eeuw (German: The theory of statutes in the Netherlands in the 17th century ), the doctor of law. He then worked as a lawyer in his hometown and continued his legal training, for which he went to Berlin and Paris. Returning to the Netherlands, he dealt with civil law, civil procedural law and published on international law. In 1900 he became a judge in 's-Hertogenbosch and in 1903 he worked as an advisor to the Jutitz ministry in The Hague. On February 21, 1907 he was appointed associate professor of international law at the University of Leiden , which office he began on October 16, 1907 with the introductory speech Critische Rechtsswetenschap en volkenrecht (German: Critical jurisprudence and international law ).

On June 8, 1911, he was appointed professor of private and international law at the University of Utrecht, which he took on on September 25, 1911 with the inaugural speech Het wereldverkeer in het privaatrecht (German: international traffic in private law ). Suijling worked on several Dutch legislative commissions. His main work is the multi-volume work Inleiding, tot het burgerlijkrecht (German: Introduction to civil law ). In the academy year 1925/26 he was elected rector of the Utrecht Alma Mater , for which he gave the rector's speech Kartel et trust in het Privaatrecht (German: Kartell and trust in private law ) on March 26, 1926 . In 1925 he became a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences , in 1926 he was appointed officer of the Belgian Leopold II Order and in 1934 as Grand Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau . In 1929 he resigned his professorship for health reasons in order to make room for younger workers. From 1930 he worked as honorary chairman of the Dutch Association of Indologists and worked in the Central Council of The Hague until 1939.

Suijling married on September 3, 1903 in Arnhem with Sofia Adriana Anna de Graaff (born October 29, 1881 in Teteringen; † 1946), the daughter of Diederik de Graff (born May 25, 1834 in Gorinchem; † June 7, 1899 in Arnhem) and his wife Anna Catharina Waardhuizen (born August 27, 1842 in 's-Hertogenbosch; † November 30, 1905 in Arnhem). The marriage resulted in a son and two daughters. From the children we know:

  • Johannes Diederik Suijling (born January 10, 1906 in The Hague, † December 2, 1944 in Apeldoorn) married. August 20, 1938 Loosduinen Frieda Corrij Adriana Fehrmann (born December 13, 1909 in Rotterdam)
  • Wilhelmina Louise Suijling (born October 18, 1907 in The Hague; † 1997) married. May 15, 1934 in The Hague with Joan Christian Gustave Verspyck Mijnssen (* February 18, 1906 in The Hague; † March 18, 1945 in Siegburg)
