Hendrik Jacobus Hamaker (born September 16, 1844 in Hilversum , † March 2, 1911 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch legal scholar.

Life

Hendrik Jacobus was the son of the writer and historian Hendrik Gerard Hamaker (born June 16, 1819 in Leiden; † November 5, 1882 in Zoeterwoude) and his wife Cornelia Anna van Vloten (born April 22, 1819 in Kampen; † April 12, 1902 in Utrecht). Since his parents moved to Katwijk , he attended school there and received private lessons. In 1858 he moved to the grammar school in Leiden and enrolled in 1863 as a law student at the University of Leiden . In Leiden he received his doctorate on May 14, 1870 with the treatise De historical school in de staathuishoudkunde (freely translated into German: The historical school of political economy ) as a doctor of law. He then worked as a lawyer and teacher in Leiden. On September 28, 1877 he was appointed professor of the encyclopedia of law, for civil ordinances and for international private law, which he did on December 12, 1877 with the introductory speech Aard en doel van het internationaal privaatrecht (freely translated into German: Nature and Purpose international private law ).

In 1884 he was briefly given a lectureship in commercial law. In his capacity as a Utrecht university lecturer, he also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1883/84 . At the resignation of the office he gave the speech Dogmatische en empirische rechts-beschouwing (freely translated into German: Dogmatic and empirical legal consideration ). From 1895 he became editor of the scientific journal Weekblad voor Privaatrecht, Notariaat en Registratie (translated freely into German: weekly paper for private law, notary and registration ). In 1889 Hamaker became a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences , he was a member of the commission for the amendment of the second revision of the Dutch Civil Code and he became a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion .

Hamaker married on July 27, 1871 in Leiden with Maria Brooshooft (born April 28, 1844 in Giesendam; † November 19, 1905 in Utrecht), the daughter of Cornelis Marius Brooshooft (born July 9, 1814 in Giessendam; † March 15 1846 ibid) and Josina van der Hoeven (born March 5, 1818 in Rotterdam; † June 5, 1893 in Utrecht). There are children from the marriage. We know of these:

September 10, 1898 in Soekanegara with Elisabeth Susanna Mauerbrecher (born February 16, 1875 in Sinkawang; † November 3, 1953 in Wageningen); mated II. July 10, 1923 in Rijswijk with Christina Marie Henriette van Haeften (born September 11, 1878 in Utrecht, † April 3, 1938 in Hilversum)
  • Cornelia Anna Hamaker (born July 7, 1874 in Leiden, † February 7, 1935 in Amersfoort)
