Barthold Jacob Lintelo de Geer van Jutphaas

Barthold Jacob Lintelo de Geer van Jutphaas also: Barthold Jacob Lintelo Baron de Geer van Jutfaas (born December 12, 1816 in Utrecht , † August 4, 1903 in Jutphaas ) was a Dutch legal scholar, historian, politician and orientalist.

Life

Geer van Jutphaas came from a noble family. His father was the Junker Antony Gustaav de Geer (born February 19, 1788 Utrecht; † February 16, 1871 in Utrecht) and his mother was the Baroness Hester van Lintelo (born March 10, 1791 in Hoogezand; † January 2, 1870 in Utrecht) . Prepared by private tutors, he entered the grammar school in Utrecht and enrolled on December 28, 1833 at the university in his hometown to study literature. During his time, among others, Philipp Wilhelm van Heusde , Antonie van Goudoever , Hermannus Bouman and Lodewijk Gerard Visscher taught at the Faculty of Philosophy, which may well have had a formative impact on the young student. With a historical treatise on General Eumenes von Kardia von Alexander the Great , with the Latin title de Eumene Cardiano a caeteris Alexandri Magni ducibus rite distinguendo , he acquired the academic degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Utrecht on September 14, 1838.

In addition, he had studied law. So here are likely Adrianus Catharinus Holtius , Hermann Arntzenius , January Ackersdijck and January Richard de Brueys have exercised a not insignificant influence on the young right candidate. In the course of these activities, a work on the origin of a legal amendment was created under the Latin title qua novella CXVIII. ex jure pristino explicator , which Geer van Jutphaas defended on March 4, 1841 under Holtius and thus obtained a doctorate in law. He then worked in legal practice and was a judge at the cantonal court in Maarssen from 1843 to 1847. On September 11, 1847 he was appointed associate professor of Roman law, its history and the legal encyclopedia of the University of Utrecht, which task he took on on September 22, 1848 with the introductory speech De aetatibus iurisprudentiae . On December 31, 1856, he was appointed full professor of Roman law and its history, which he assumed on January 21, 1857.

From 1855 to January 1, 1856, he had also taken care of the vacant professorship for Hebrew, Arabic and Oriental literature. Geer van Jutphaas also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in the vacancy period from January to March 1871 in 1850/51, 1869/70 and after the death of Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel . He was also politically active from the April Movement of 1853. As a member of the Anti-Revolutionaire Partij , the Vrij-Antirevolutionaire Partij and the Christelijk-Historische Partij, he sat on the city council of Utrecht from 1869 to 1889, was a member of the Second Chamber of the States General from 1884 to 1894 , and was a member of the Provincial Parliament from 1874 to 1903 and from 1889 to 1903 member of the Gedeputeerde State for Utrecht. He sat in various commissions for the social issues of his time.

For example, he had campaigned for the Dutch water system in the political field, campaigned for school issues, worked in the commission for the amendment of the Dutch civil code in 1881 and in the commission for the amendment of the Dutch constitution in 1886. In the scientific field, the professor emeritus, who retired in 1887, became chairman of the Association for the Issuance of Sources of Old Dutch Law, he became chairman of the historical society of the provincial Utrecht Society of Sciences and Arts, and from 1859 was a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences . As the firstborn son of his family, he was also allowed to bear the title of baron, he was honorary chairman of the Utrecht knighthood and knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion . He died on the Geers family home in Jutphaas and was buried in the Kerkveld family grave there.
