His mother then married the pastor Reinier Schweigholt (died August 14, 1763 in Amsterdam; † March 3, 1831 in Loenen ) in Koudekerk , from whom the young Holtius received the first instructions on the Latin and Greek languages. In 1812 Holtius was given a court position in Loenen and in 1814 moved to Amersfoort as a mortgage keeper. After his brother-in-law Jan Richard de Brueys accepted an appointment at the University of Utrecht in 1815, Holstius took over his professorship at the Athenaeum in Deventer . In the wake of the Belgian Revolution , Holtius left Leuven. On March 6, 1831, he found a new university professor position in Utrecht, where he was appointed adjunct professor of law, which he assumed on August 23, 1831. On February 23, 1835 he was appointed full professor of law. After he had taken on this task on March 26, 1835, he gave his introductory speech on March 24, 1836, Oratio de liberalitate majorum nostrorum, quae academiis instituendis augendisque cognita est . In his capacity as a Utrecht university lecturer, he also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1835/36 . At the resignation of the rectorate he gave the speech de liberalitate majorum nostrum quae academiis instituendis augendisque cognita est . On January 1, 1857, he was retired.
