Witnesses of the Century is a series of interviews by ZDF with people from contemporary history who are interviewed by changing interlocutors.

history

In the first edition in 1979, Walther Schmieding spoke to Wolfgang Stresemann on the 50th anniversary of the death of his father, Reich Chancellor and Foreign Minister Gustav Stresemann . The programs were between 45 and 75 minutes long, which was not enough for some of the interviewees. Around 20 of the more than 300 conversations were broadcast in two parts, for example the conversations with the former Federal Chancellors Kurt Georg Kiesinger and Willy Brandt and the philosopher Leo Löwenthal . The conversations with the futurologist Robert Jungk and the media scientist and art educator Rudolf Arnheim were even broadcast in three parts.

Other witnesses of the century included Otto von Habsburg , Louis Ferdinand von Prussia , Henry Kissinger , Willy Brandt , Richard von Weizsäcker , Bruno Kreisky , Golo Mann , Hans Abich , HG Adler , Jean Améry , Lew Kopelew , Nahum Goldmann , Simon Wiesenthal , Heiner Müller , Gregor von Rezzori , Johannes Mario Simmel , Ephraim Kishon , Gerd Bucerius , Marion Gräfin Dönhoff , Reinhard Mohn , Axel Springer , George Weidenfeld , André Kostolany , Teddy Kollek , Josef Neckermann , Ferry Porsche , Yehudi Menuhin , Herbert von Karajan , Ossip K. Flechtheim , Norbert Elias , Josef Pieper , Ernst Fuchs , Hans Küng , Klaus Scholder , Dorothee Sölle , Ivan Nagel , Rolf Boysen , Peter Wapnewski , Lore Lorentz , Eddie Constantine and Isa Vermehren . The series ran at irregular intervals, mostly on slots before 11 p.m. for the first ten years, and mostly shortly before midnight for the next ten years. In 1999, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the series, ZDF repeatedly showed old episodes in long “Witness of the Century” nights. Until 2004, the night became the broadcasting slot for the Witnesses in the new century.

Interviewers or moderators were usually journalists, sometimes also publicists and historians; There is a certain basic sympathy with regard to the content - especially when talking to politicians - with many questioners. Moderators were u. a. Arnulf Baring , Gero von Boehm , François Bondy , Leo Brawand , Klaus Bresser , Jürgen Busche , Axel Eggebrecht , Ruprecht Eser , Joachim Fest , Peter Glotz , Johannes Gross , Ingo Hermann , Ludolf Herrmann , Michael Jungblut , Hans-Christoph Knebusch , Guido Knopp , Peter Koslowski , Dieter Kronzucker , Volker Kühn , Gerhard Löwenthal , Alexander U. Martens , Frank A. Meyer , Marlies Menge , Hans Mohl , Volker Panzer , Iris Radisch , Dirk Sager , Markus Schächter , Horst Schättle , Frank Schirrmacher , Klaus-Peter Siegloch , Karl Schnelting , Hanns Werner Schwarze , Theo Sommer , Gustav Trampe , Carola Wedel , Roger Willemsen , Johannes Willms and Dieter Zimmer .

Hans Abich , Axel Eggebrecht, Joachim Fest and Marcel Reich-Ranicki were the only ones in the series so far who were both interviewed contemporary witnesses and inviting interlocutors.

The series was reissued in 2014. The time slot moved to late evening. The former Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder was invited as a contemporary witness on the occasion of his 70th birthday . The conversation partner was ZDF director Thomas Bellut . Former Federal Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher and ZDF founding director Karl Holzamer are the only contemporary witnesses who have each been twice a guest on the series.

Many conversations have appeared in paperback editions, including the conversation that Joachim Fest had with Marcel Reich-Ranicki in 1984 . In the volume entitled “Between Dictatorship and Literature”, Reich-Ranicki told a broad public for the first time in detail about his fate, especially during the Nazi era, twelve years before his autobiography “Mein Leben” became a great sales success.

The following list includes 289 (as of December 2016) of the 300 calls sent according to ZDF data (data from April 2014). Numerous discussions are now fully or partially accessible on web portals.
