Hans Ulrich Kempski

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Ulrich Kempski (born August 3, 1922 in Dramburg , Pomerania , † December 30, 2007 in Munich ) was one of the most influential German journalists as the longstanding chief correspondent of the Süddeutsche Zeitung .

Life

Hans Ulrich Kempski attended the humanistic cathedral high school in Naumburg . He wrote his first newspaper report while still in Quarters about a three- wheeled truck that overturned in a sharp bend at the Salztor in Naumburg . Kempski had waited patiently for weeks for the foreseeable event at this point. During the Second World War he was wounded several times as a paratrooper . He began his career as a journalist in 1946 as head of the Munich office of the German news agency (DENA). From October 1949 he was chief reporter of the Süddeutsche Zeitung in Munich, from 1970 to 1987 he was chief correspondent member of the newspaper's chief editor. After leaving the editorial team, Kempski remained associated with the SZ as a special correspondent. He published his last article for SZ-Magazin in November 2007. For years he was spokesman for the jury of the Egon Erwin Kisch Prize .

Kempski happened to be the messenger in Moscow in 1955 who was supposed to deliver the invitation from the Soviet Union to Konrad Adenauer to establish diplomatic relations.

In 1960 an interview by Kempski with the commander-in-chief of the French troops in Algeria , General Jacques Massu , led to his transfer by President de Gaulle and, as a result, to a national crisis in the Fifth Republic .

In his reports on German and international politics, which appeared under the heading "Hans Ulrich Kempski reports ...", Kempski rejected the strict separation between news and opinion, as this, in his opinion, prevents "the presentation of the whole truth". Kempski's principle was: "If you want to watch, you must not play".

Hans Ulrich Kempski died at the age of 86. He left behind his wife, two sons and two grandchildren.
