Ulrich Berls
Ulrich Berls (* 1954 in Reutlingen ) is a German television journalist and publicist. From 2005 to 2015 he was head of the ZDF state studio in Bavaria. He has been a regular columnist in the debate magazine THE EUROPEAN since 2016 .
Life
From 1976 Berls studied political science , public law and German in Tübingen , Munich and London . In 1983 he received his doctorate at Geschwister-Scholl-Institute for Political Science at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich with Kurt Sontheimer to Dr. phil. During his studies he worked as a freelancer for various newspapers and magazines and as an intern at Bavaria Atelier GmbH for half a year .
His career at ZDF began in 1984 with an 18-month traineeship at the headquarters in Mainz-Lerchenberg . Berls then worked as an editor in various areas of the main newsroom and was then a reporter at the ZDF regional studio in Baden-Württemberg for two years. In 1990 he returned to the ZDF headquarters as program officer for program director Oswald Ring . From 1992 he was in the main editorial department for culture, initially editor-in-chief for literature and art, then for culture and society. Among other things, he had conversations with Kurt Sontheimer , Manfred Rommel Wilhelm Hennis and Alfred Grosser in the television series "Witnesses of the Century" , and he was also responsible for the ZDF series "Terra X".
In 1994 he left ZDF to help set up the Bavarian Academy for Television as a founding director.
On July 1, 2005, Berls returned to ZDF and took over the management of the Bavarian State Studio (succeeding Christoph Minhoff , who had switched to the Phoenix broadcaster as program manager ). He retired on July 1, 2015.
Berls is a member of the jury for the Bavarian TV Prize . He has been a member of the Munich Press Club since 1995 , and was also a member of the board until 2014. He is a member of the Presidium of the Bavarian Academy for Television (BAF).
