Philippe Combelle

Philippe "Fifi" Combelle (* 14. July 1939 in Paris ) is a French drummer of modern jazz .

Live and act

Combelle comes from a musical family (his father is the jazz musician Alix Combelle ). He first learned the piano and then switched to the tenor saxophone and double bass before he discovered drums for himself. In 1957 he started in his father's orchestra before joining Henri Renaud , where he already played the drums and played with Zoot Sims . After he had proven himself in the jazz clubs of Paris, he went on a European tour with the Allstars of Jack Diéval . Then he accompanied Sonny Criss , Memphis Slim , Don Byas , Sonny Stitt and Toots Thielemans ( Mister Blues pour flirter , 1963), Dexter Gordon and Stephane Grappelli . Between 1964 and 1967 he worked for Jacques Brel . Then he was part of Marc Hemmeler's trio (with Pierre Michelot ) before he founded the Baroque Jazz Trio with Jean-Charles Capon and Georges Rabol in 1969 , with which he recorded a highly acclaimed album. He also played with Olivier Hutman , Georges Arvanitas and Maurice Vander and with Jimmy Gourley . In Senegal he appeared in public concerts with Doudou N'Diaye Rose in front of Leopold Senghor in the early 1980s . Then he played with Buck Clayton , René Urtreger and Sacha Distel before forming his own combo. He also accompanied Jimmy Slide and Ray Brown / Pierre Boussaguet . He has also recorded with Guy Lafitte ( Joue Charles Trenet ), Christian Escoudé ( Gipsy Waltz , 1989), Daniel Colin and Buddy DeFranco ( Live at the Alligators ).
