Positions

Dieter Balkhausen published the book The Third Industrial Revolution in 1978 . How microelectronics is changing our lives , with which he coined the term third industrial revolution - meaning the digital revolution - in Germany. The book was then considered the standard work on this topic and has been reprinted several times. In this and the following books, he considered whether and how microelectronics changed our lives, and he assessed the corresponding changes as a new “technical-economic revolution”.

Balkhausen had a critical but fundamentally positive attitude towards microelectronics: "So far, the prophets of earlier times, who conjure up the curse of industrial revolutions, have been wrong". He registered social changes such as telecommunications as well as the "emergence of new cultural ties," developments that he regarded as "revolutionary". He criticized the rationalization by writing, for example: "It is also one of the legends that saving personnel really always saves costs."
