Hans Lamm (born on June 6, 1913 in Munich ; died on April 23, 1985 there ) was a journalist, publicist and association official. From 1970 to 1985 he was President of the Jewish Community in Munich and Upper Bavaria and a member of the board of directors of the Central Council of Jews in Germany .

Live and act

Hans Lamm was born in Munich in 1913 as the younger of two sons of the blacksmith Ignaz Lamm and the teacher Martha Lamm, nee. Pinczower born. His brother was the doctor Heinrich Lamm (1908–1974).

In 1932 he graduated from the Luitpold secondary school and began studying law in Munich. After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists , he switched to journalism because, as a Jew, he would have been denied access to relevant positions after graduation. From 1934 to 1937 he worked in the social department of the Munich Jewish community. In 1938 he emigrated to the USA and studied sociology at the University of Kansas City from 1939 to 1941 .

In June 1945 he returned to Munich as a representative of the aid organization UNRRA and worked as a translator for the Nuremberg trials . In 1951 he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. From 1955 he finally lived in Germany again and was initially head of the cultural department of the Central Council of Jews in Germany. He was u. a. also translator of the book Why We Can't Wait by Martin Luther King .

From 1960 until his retirement in 1976 he was head of department at the Munich Adult Education Center and also active as a lecturer. From 1970 until his death he was the successor to Dr. Siegfried Neuland President of the Jewish Community in Munich and Upper Bavaria. As a member of the Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation , he endeavored for many years to achieve good understanding with other denominations and cultures, while at the same time campaigning for the rights of minorities. He donated a scholarship fund to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem for the annual support of one Arab and one Jewish student.
