from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leo Brawand (born November 18, 1924 in Hanover , † June 8, 2009 in Hamburg ) was a German journalist , co-founder and editor -in- chief of Spiegel , publisher of Manager Magazin and author during the Spiegel affair .

childhood

Leo Brawand grew up in poor conditions in the Hanover district of Nordstadt . In his autobiographical book Die Menschen vom Damme he later - based on his own youth - traced the living conditions of the little people there in great detail. However, there is evidence that he did not spend his childhood described during the Weimar Republic on Am Puttenser Felde under the roof of house number 9, but under number 7.

According to his description, Brawand spent his youth during National Socialism at Engelbosteler Damm 119 (now: house number 45).

Professional background

In 1946, the English teacher Brawand joined the Spiegelvorläufer This week and was directly involved in the conversion to the Spiegel under Rudolf Augstein . He became head of the economic department and in 1972 editor-in-chief of Manager Magazin , a title of the Spiegel publishing house.

During the Spiegel affair , Brawand was editor-in-chief of the Spiegel for 103 days when Rudolf Augstein was in custody. Augstein had called Brawand out of prison. Allegedly, Brawand had hidden in a closet during the search and warned Rudolf Augstein by telephone so that he could present himself to the police.

In the 1970s he had television appearances on programs such as Pro & Contra and regularly took part in the international morning pint .

After leaving Manager Magazin in 1981, Brawand wrote books that often addressed his experiences at Spiegel and Manager Magazin. A few weeks before his death, Brawand finished the manuscript for another book.

The then German Federal Minister of Economics, Martin Bangemann, named Brawand in 1988 when he was awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit as the nestor of German business magazines .
