Brigitte Bermann Fischer

Brigitte Bermann Fischer (also Bermann-Fischer , born March 5, 1905 in Berlin as Brigitte-Eva Fischer ; died May 28, 1991 in Camaiore ) was a German publisher , typesetter and calligrapher . She was the eldest daughter of the founder of S. Fischer Verlag, Samuel Fischer, and after his death took over the management of the publishing house together with her husband Gottfried Bermann Fischer .

Life

The couple Brigitte Fischer and Gottfried Bermann met in Berlin in 1924 and married in 1927. The two had three daughters between 1926 and 1931, including Gisela Fischer . In 1935 the family emigrated to Stockholm via Vienna and finally to the USA in 1940 . After their father Samuel Fischer died in 1934, the couple took over the publishing house. In the 1940s, Bermann-Fischer also frequently took on the book equipment for the published books (illustrations, dust jackets, cover designs and book decorations), as she was a trained typesetter and calligrapher. For example, she designed the dust jacket for “ Der Seelenbräu ” by Carl Zuckmayer (1945). In 1948 the couple returned to Germany, but moved to Tuscany in 1965 , where Brigitte Bermann-Fischer died in 1991.
