Walter Eugene Egan (born June 2, 1881 in Chicago , Illinois , † September 12, 1971 in Monterey , California ) was an American golfer .
biography
Walter Egan, like his younger cousin Chandler Egan , played golf at the Exmoor Country Club . In 1899 he joined the US amateur but was eliminated in the first round. A year later he reached the final, where he was supposed to play against Walter Travis , but the game was postponed for a week because of the assassination attempt on President William McKinley . However, Egan had to return to Harvard University to take exams and was unable to train. He lost the final to Travis 5: 4. In 1903 Walter Chandler was able to defeat his cousin Chandler in the Western Amateur and won the tournament.
At the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis , he was Olympic champion with the Western Golf Association in team competition . In the individual, however, he was eliminated in the first round against Albert Bond Lambert .
The two cousins later joined the Cypress Point Golf Club in Monterey .
