Lia Frank

Lia Frank (born November 18, 1921 as Lia Gerstein in Kaunas , Lithuania ; † April 6, 2012 in Berlin ) was a Soviet and German-Jewish writer , poet , professor , essayist , lawyer , interpreter and translator .

Life

Frank's father, David Gerstein, was a primary school teacher and taught a.o. A. at a Jewish primary school in Riga. He had to give up his position because he had Polish citizenship. She grew up in Berlin, Germany ; later the family emigrated to Ludza , a small town in Latvia , where they attended the Jewish high school. She graduated from high school in the last pre-war year, 1940. She then studied law at the Riga University . After the attack the Wehrmacht on the Soviet Union in 1941. Frank fled to the unoccupied part of the Soviet Union and continued her studies in Sverdlovsk continued. In 1945 she returned to Latvia. In 1960 she and her family moved to Dushanbe , the capital of the Tajik Soviet Republic . There she taught German and Latin; a degree in psychology, which she completed with a doctorate , she completed in Moscow. In 1988 Lia Frank left Tajikistan with her son and went to Germany. From 1993 she lived in Sigmaringen ; later she moved to Berlin .

As early as the 1970s, Lia Frank published poems written in German in the Soviet Union. Since the 1980s she has been working intensively on the poem form of the haiku ; In addition to theoretical texts, she published her own haikus and translated haikus from Japanese into German with the help of a Japanese Germanist . - Lia Frank was a member of the Soviet Writers' Union ; most recently she was a member of the exile PEN and the German Haiku Society .

Lia Frank died on April 6, 2012 in Berlin. Her grave is in the Jewish cemetery in Berlin-Weißensee .
