Antonie van Goudoever also: Antonius van Goudoever (born May 1, 1785 in Utrecht ; † September 7, 1857 ibid) was a Dutch classical philologist .

Life

Antonie was the son of the notary and beer picker Ernestus van Goudoever and his wife Catharina van der Pauw, the daughter of the Utrecht notary Luyt van der Pauw. At the age of sixteen he enrolled at the University of Utrecht on September 18, 1801 , where he began studying law at the age of eighteen. During his studies he was not insignificantly influenced by Philipp Wilhelm van Heusde , received his doctorate in law under Cornelis Willem de Rhoer on June 17, 1808, and in the same year became the rector of the Latin school in Zwolle . One of his students here was Johan Rudolf Thorbecke in 1814 . After he had rejected an appointment as professor at the Athenaeum in Deventer , he was appointed professor of ancient philosophy and literature at the Utrecht University on October 16, 1815.

After he had been awarded an honorary doctorate in philosophy on January 10, 1816, he took up the professorship assigned to him on January 22, 1816 with the speech Oratio de antiquis historicis cum recentioribus comparatis . In 1820 he refused an appointment at the University of Leiden and in 1827/28 he took over the rectorate of the University of Utrecht . His lectures dealt with classical literature and education until his retirement on May 17, 1855. Goudoever was a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion , in 1816 a member of the Utrecht Provincial Society for Science and the Arts, since 1810 a member of the Royal Institute of the Netherlands and in 1813 a member of the Society of Dutch Literature in Leiden.

Goudoever married Johanna Elisabeth Kreling (born 1791) in Amsterdam in 1810. From the children we know:
