Jan Ackersdijck also: Jan Ackersdijk (born October 22, 1790 in 's-Hertogenbosch ; † July 13, 1861 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch lawyer, statistician and political economist.

Life

Jan was the son of the lawyer and secretary in 's-Hertogenbosch Willem Cornelis Ackersdijck (* December 12, 1760 in' s-Hertogenbosch; † February 6, 1843 in Rotterdam) and his wife Maria Cornelia Bowier (* January 11, 1753 in ' s Hertogenbosch, † May 1, 1827 in Rotterdam). After attending the French and Latin schools in 's-Hertogenbosch, he was enrolled at the University of Utrecht on September 9, 1806 , where he began studying law in 1807. His most influential teachers during his student days were Philipp Wilhelm van Heusde and Cornelis Willem de Rhoer . Under Hermann Arntzenius he received his doctorate on August 31, 1810 with the treatise Quaestiones juridicae inaugurales to the doctor of law. He then worked as a lawyer in Utrecht and in 1815 took part in the wars of liberation among the volunteer hunters . In 1817 he was employed at the court in Utrecht and in 1825 was appointed professor of political science at the University of Liège , which task he took up on December 31, 1825 with the introductory speech de utilitate quam studia imprimis historica et politicae peregrinationibus capiunt . In August 1830, the events of the Belgian Revolution also gripped Liège, so that Ackersdijck and his Dutch colleagues had to leave the Belgian provinces.

He moved to Berlin via Aachen. In Germany he received on March 6, 1831 a call as adjunct professor of law at the University of Utrecht. Therefore, he left in July and took up the post entrusted to him on August 23, 1831. On January 4, 1840 he became a full professor of state economics, which he remained until his retirement in October 1860. As a Utrecht university lecturer, he also took part in the organizational tasks of the educational institution and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1840/41 . He was also a member of several learned societies at home and abroad. For example, he became a corresponding member on March 7, 1836 and a full member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences on February 23, 1855 , in 1813 a member of the provincial Utrecht Society of Arts and Sciences, in 1832 he became a member of the Society for Dutch Literature in Leiden, He was also a member of the Dutch Statistics Association and the Society for the Promotion of Industry in Haarlem. He also campaigned for political issues. So he became a member of the Utrecht City Council and a member of the provincial states of Holland. The first academic practitioner of political economy and statistics in the Netherlands, had left his academic work in various academic journals and magazines in the Netherlands. He also had a penchant for extended trips, so that some of his works also deal with travelogues.

Ackersdijck married on August 30, 1843 in Utrecht with Maria Anna Wallerthum (also: Walterthum * 1804 in Stolberg (Rhineland); † October 24, 1883 in Utrecht) the daughter of Andreas Wallerthum and Anna Maria Edenkovens. From the marriage, children of these are known to the recognized daughter Adelaide Catharine Joseph Ackersdijck (born December 19, 1826 in Liège; † January 27, 1900 in 's-Gravenhage?) Married. October 19, 1848 in Utrecht with Prof. Cornelis Willem Opzoomer (* September 20, 1821 in Rotterdam; † August 23, 1892 in Oosterbeek) and the daughter Maria Cornelia Ackersdijck (* March 14, 1848 in Utrecht; † January 5, 1893 in Ginneken) m. January 11, 1866 in Utrecht with Henri Ferdinand Borel (born April 10, 1835 in Maastricht; † May 20, 1881 in Breda) II. On April 19, 1888 in Haarlem with the military doctor and pharmacist Francois Martin Gerard van Walsem (born June 28, 1853 in Hoorn, † August 1, 1888 in Teterigen).
