Johannes Jacobus van Oosterzee

Johannes Jacobus van Oosterzee (born April 1, 1817 in Rotterdam , † July 27, 1882 in Wiesbaden ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian.

Life

Oosterzee came from a middle-class family. His parents were the city tax collector Mattheus Henrik van Oosterzee (born January 13, 1779 in Rotterdam; † April 17, 1823 there) and the pastor's daughter Debora Jacoba Thomson (died January 16, 1777 in Ritthem; † December 15, 1844 in Rotterdam) . Initially he attended the French school and in 1830 the Erasmus grammar school in his hometown. On December 27, 1834, he enrolled at the University of Utrecht , where he began studying theology. Here he initially attended the lectures of Philipp Wilhelm van Heusde and Johannes Friedrich Ludwig Schröder . His theological teachers were Jodocus Heringa Eliza's zoon , Hermannus Bouman , Herman Johan Royaards and Henricus Egbertus Vinke . In October 1839 he was a candidate for a pastor's office and on June 23, 1840, with the theological treatise de Jesu, e virgine Maria nato, he earned the theological doctorate. On February 7, 1841 he became pastor in Eemnes -Binnendijks, moved to Alkmaar in the same capacity in 1843 and became pastor in Rotterdam in November 1844.

From 1845 he began to publish the Jaarboeken voor wetenschappelijke theologie with his college friend Jacobus Isaac Doedes , which work he continued until 1854. With his conservative theological ideas, he was a representative of the orthodox Dutch supranaturalism . In 1845/46 he got into an argument about an apologetic study with Cornelis Willem Opzoomer , in 1850 with Johannes Henricus Scholten about his empty Hervormde Kerk (German: Doctrine of the Reformed Church ) and Abraham Kuyper about his theopneusty ( Theopneustie over de Ingeving of the Holy Scriptures. Utrecht 1882). On October 18, 1862, he was appointed professor of theology at the Utrecht University, which he took over on January 30, 1863 with the speech de scepticismo, hodiernis theologis caute vitando . He read about dogmatics, biblical and practical theology, after October 1, 1877 about the introduction to the New Testament, about the history of dogma and theological philosophy. In his capacity as a Utrecht university professor, he also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1868/69 . At the resignation of the office he gave the speech De Religione Christiana optima verae humanitatis magistra .

As a writer and poet, he was a member of the Society for Dutch Literature in Leiden. From 1861 he was also a member of the Historical Theological Society in Leipzig, a member of the Dutch Gustav Adolf Association in Utrecht, a member of the provincial Utrecht Society for the Arts and Sciences, a member of the North Brabant Society in 's-Hertogenbosch, a member of the Royal Batavian Society of the Arts and sciences and other learned societies. He was a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion , 1860 Knight of the North Star Order , 1869 Knight of the Prussian Order of the Crown, 3rd Class, and in 1869 was commander of the Order of the Oak Crown . During a cure in Bad Schwalbach he fell ill and was taken to a hospital in Wiesbaden, where he died. His body was transferred to Utrecht, where he was buried in the Soestbergen cemetery.
