Jacobus Isaac Doedes

Life

Doedes came from a Dutch pastor's family. His grandfather Jan Wijnand Doedes (born October 4, 1756 in Utrecht; † August 20, 1829 in 's-Gravendeel) was pastor in Haringvliet (1783–1787), Burgh (1787–1789) and' s-Gravendeel (1789– 1827). His father Gualterus Doedes (born December 17, 1788 in Burgh (Schouwen); † January 21, 1859 in Haarlem) comes from his marriage to Gualtherina Cornelia Kolff (born March 29, 1758 in Spijk; † February 3, 1838 in Medemblik). , who after studying in 1812 at the University of Utrecht, there on March 21, 1816 Femmetje (Teuntje) van Goudoever (* 1786 in Utrecht; † February 17, 1826 in Medemblik), the daughter of Jacobus van Goudoever (* around 1747; † November 5, 1823 in Utrecht) and Magdalena van Daalen (* around 1756; † January 7, 1844 in Utrecht), married and on April 21, 1816 became pastor in Langerak. In 1820 he moved to Grootebroek as pastor and in 1822 to Medemblik.

His parents married seven children, three of whom died in early childhood. Jacobus Isaac Doedes was born as the first son of the family. His father, who also distinguished himself through the publication of some empty speeches, seems to have had a formative influence on his son. Since he lost his mother at the age of eight, the father married on October 26, 1827 in Amsterdam Maria Cornelia Blok (born October 11, 1797 in Enkhuizen; † June 12, 1834 in Medemblik), the daughter of the commissioner in the Navy In Amsterdam Andries Roelof Blok (born March 16, 1770 in Enkhuizen; † December 1, 1846 in Purmerend) and his wife Alida Spanjaard (born August 31, 1767 in Medemblik; † October 7, 1846 in Purmerend). Living with his step-grandparents, he attended the Latin school in Amsterdam in 1830 and enrolled on June 12, 1834 as Gymnasio Amstelodamensi magna cum laude dimissus at the University of Utrecht .

Following a study of theological sciences, he attended lectures on exegesis of the Old and New Testaments, hermeneutics and natural theology with Hermannus Bouman , those on church history and ethics with Herman Johan Royaards and on dogmatics, as well as practical theology with Henricus Egbertus Vinke . On June 16, 1841 he received his doctorate in theology with the theological treatise de Jesu in vitam reditu . On August 5, 1841, Doedes passed his exam for admission to the parish profession at the provincial church authority of Overijssel and applied for a few guest sermons at various parishes. On February 13, 1843 he received an appointment as pastor of the small village of Hall, where he began his office on July 9, 1843 with a sermon on Paul's letter to the Ephesians (chapter 1, verses 16-20). During his time in Hall, he received an award from the Teyler Society for his elaborate negotiation on the textual criticism of the writings of the New Association and, with his college friend Johannes Jacobus van Oosterzee, began to publish the Jaarboeken voor wetenschappelijke theologie from 1845 , which work he continued until 1854 . After he had made a name for himself through the publication of some writings and as an orthodox dispute theologian, the attention of the Rotterdam community was drawn to him. From there he received an appointment as pastor in March 1847. Doedes therefore said goodbye to his congregation in Hall on August 22, 1847 with a farewell sermon on Paul's second letter to the Thessalonians (II: 11a) and began on September 5, 1847 with a sermon on the first letter of John ( II: 12b) his assigned office.

In 1852 Doedes participated in the founding of the Association of Dutch Reformed Preachers, which set itself the task of promoting Christian national and church interests. He headed the editorial department of the Ernst en Vrede association until 1857. However, the association was dissolved in 1859. He also participated in the April Movement of 1853, which opposed an episcopal hierarchy in the Netherlands. In addition to his work in his congregation, he vehemently opposed modern trends in theology and, as a member of synods, campaigned for the preservation of the tradition of the church. On April 13, 1859 he was appointed professor of theology at the Utrecht University. Therefore he took leave of the Rotterdam congregation on June 19, 1859 with a sermon on Paul's letter to the Colossians and took over the teaching post in Utrecht on June 22, 1859 with the speech de critica studiose a theologis exercenda . Doedes gave lectures here on the exegesis of the New Testament, hermeneutics and criticism, natural theology and theological encyclopedia. In 1877 his teaching assignment was changed to theological encyclopedia, church history and interpretation of the New Testament. As a university lecturer in Utrecht, he also took part in the university's organizational tasks and was rector of the alma mater in 1864/65 and 1873/74 . When he resigned from the rector's council, he gave the Latin speech de libertate cum theologiae, tum etiam ecclesiae Christianae strenue vindicanda in 1865 and the Dutch speech De toepassing van de ontwikkelingstheorie, niet aan te bevelen voor de geschiedenis der godsdiensten in 1874 . On May 13, 1874 he became a knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion and in 1889 was knight 3rd class of the Prussian Order of the Crown . He held his last lecture on June 21, 1888, retired on September 18, 1888, but remained active as an author afterwards.
