Hendrick Moreelse (born December 17, 1615 in Utrecht ; † May 26, 1666 ibid) was a Dutch lawyer and mayor of Utrecht.

Life

The son of the painter and councilor Paul Moreelse initially attended the Latin school in his hometown. He continued his education at the grammar school in Harderwijk , where Johann Isaak Pontanus (1571-1639) and Anton Matthäus (1601-1654) were his teachers. He followed Matthew when he went to the newly founded grammar school in Utrecht. When the educational institution was elevated to Utrecht University , he completed his first law studies there.

In 1637 he moved to the University of Leiden , where he attended the lectures of Claudius Salmasius (1588–1653), Daniel Heinsius and Arnoldus Vinnius . Then he traveled to France, where he attended the universities in Paris , Geneva and Bourges . At the last university he obtained his doctorate in law under Edmund Merillius (also Merille 1579–1647). Returned to Utrecht, he became professor of law on June 25, 1644, which position he took up with the speech Oratio de jurisprudentiae Romanae usu hodierno .

He held this office for ten years, was rector of the Alma Mater in 1646/47 and was increasingly used by the Utrecht city administration for their interests. In 1652 he became assessor at the court of Utrecht, in 1654 resigned his professorship with the speech de Manuductione studiosi juris per Academiam ad Rempublicam and in 1655 became assessor of the Chamdre Demi-partie. He also worked in the municipal area of ​​the city. There he became a councilor in 1661 and was mayor of the city of Utrecht from 1662 to 1664. In the latter function, he had made particular efforts to expand the city.
