Meinardus Siderius Pols (born October 28, 1831 in The Hague , † December 28, 1897 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch legal scholar.

Life

Meinardus Siderius was the son of the post director in The Hague Jacques Pols (born October 27, 1794 in The Hague; † March 2, 1864 ibid) and his first wife Jeannette Hermine Deketh (born August 25, 1802 in The Hague; † October 5 1846 ibid). After attending grammar school in The Hague, he passed his university admission in Haarlem in 1849 and enrolled at the University of Leiden on September 12, 1849 . Here he completed a law degree and received his doctorate on May 1, 1854 as a doctor of law. He then worked as a lawyer in The Hague, specializing in criminal law. In 1866 he became an aditeur at the Military Court in The Hague and worked from 1870 to 1875 in the state commission for the compilation of the Dutch penal code.

In 1874 he switched to the High Military Court in Utrecht as a tax attorney and was appointed professor of criminal law at the University of Utrecht on July 27, 1879 . He began this task on September 26, 1879 with the introductory speech Het bestaan, de ontwikkeling en de tegenwoordige toestand van het Nederlandsche criminal law . On May 6, 1885, he also took over the chair of Old Dutch Law and its History, which he held until September 1, 1887. In his capacity as a Utrecht university professor, he also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1893/94 .

Pols was a member of the Historical Society in Utrecht in 1876, a member of the Provincial Utrecht Society of Sciences and Arts in 1878 and a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences in 1882 . He became Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion , Knight Second Class of the Russian Order of Saint Anne , Commander of the Legion of Honor and, in 1888, Commander of the Order of the Crown of Italy . In 1897 he retired at his own request and died in the same year.
